What are the differences and similarities between LED and fluorescent lights?
LED Lights
LED lights (light emitting diodes) will light up when electrical currents pass through the light’s microchip. LEDs are much more flexible than other lighting technology because they are so small. LEDs can come as a cluster of diodes to create a light bulb or as single diodes, used to create a flashlight. Sometimes, LEDs can be built into fixtures instead of an individual light bulb. Heat sinks help keep the LEDs from getting too hot. This means they can last much longer than expected without burning out entirely.
Fluorescent Lights
Fluorescent lights will come in two types: tube lighting and CFL (compact fluorescent lighting). These lights can range in size, from tubes that are a few feet long to compact bulbs the size of a standard light bulb. Light emerges from these bulbs once the electrical current passes through a tube with mercury vapor and argon.
Energy Consumption
Both LEDs and CFLs come in well below incandescent bulbs when it comes to energy consumption. In fact, LEDs work about 90% more efficiently than incandescent bulbs. CFLs work about 70% more efficiently. LED bulbs will use about half the wattage compared to fluorescent, which is about 6 watts of power versus 14 watts of power of a CFL bulb.
Lifespan Comparison
More and more halogen bulbs are being replaced by LED bulbs these days, especially in the retail industry. Retailers are frequently making this switch because LED bulbs simply last longer than traditional options. The only downside to LED bulbs is the limited capacity due to the electronics in the lighting. LED bulbs must remain at a cool temperature at all times. When these bulbs begin to heat up, they will stop working completely. Contrary to belief, switching a light on and off frequently will not increase the lifespan.
LED Average Lifespan: 60,000 hours
Fluorescent lighting, specifically CFL bulbs, will last up to 10,000 hours before a replacement is needed. Essentially, you would have to replace a CFL bulb six times during one lifespan of an LED light bulb.
Fluorescent Average Lifespan: 10,000 hours
Lighting Ability
Ideal for lighting full rooms, fluorescent light is commonly used in large warehouses where strong lighting is a necessity. Fluorescent ballasts may sometimes flicker or take a long time to light up completely. CFL bulbs are typically used in bedrooms or other living areas. Smaller versions of fluorescent light can also take some time to reach full brightness.
LED lighting is great for flashlights and desk lamps. LEDs will focus on specific areas where the bulb is focused. Newer LED bulbs use diffuser lenses/reflectors to create a wider spread of light. LEDs can be found in headlights and other electronic devices, as well.
Lighting Benefits
Here are just three benefits of using LED lighting in your store(s):
Creates A Welcoming Environment
Any store will seem outdated and dull whenever older lighting is displayed. Brighten up your store and create a more welcoming environment for your valued customers by investing in LED lights. Upgrading your lighting system to LED will give your store and its displays a modern appeal. LED lights, of course, can be customized to fit your every need. A variety of warmth and brightness ranges offer several options to give your store a truly a unique look. Lights that are too bright and abrasive will now be a thing of the past.
Improves Profitability
LED lights will improve profitability by saving on electricity costs. These lights have been shown to save businesses up to 75% off electricity costs. The larger investment that must be made to purchase these lights will be well worth the cost in the long run. Plus, LED lights can last up to 20 years, saving you from any maintenance/upkeep costs. Combining the electricity and maintenance savings with improved sales, makes LED lighting an obvious choice for small or large retailers.
Improves Store Displays
Customers are more likely to buy something when they can clearly see the products. With directional and undercounter lighting, LEDs will highlight any top products or displays. Jewelers believe LED lighting is essential for success. Gems and jewels will sparkle and glow with the help of LED lights.
